Long haul trucking is the backbone of the economy, and truck drivers are always in demand. The trucking workforce is aging and is declining, so if you were ever looking to make the jump into the world of trucking, now is the time! Driving a truck offers tons of benefits, great pay, you aren’t stuck behind a desk, and you get to go out and see the country.  With any career choice, it may seem daunting to get started, or even figuring out how you get into the industry, but becoming a trucker can be easier than you think!

The first thing you want to do is find a truck driving school or community college that offers a CDL class. CDL stands for commercial driver’s license, and it is required for anyone that is operating commercial motor vehicles such as tractor trailers, buses, or construction vehicles. Most programs will give you a mix of drive time and classroom time to make sure you are fully comfortable before you take your actual CDL test. Here you will learn all of the ins and outs of driving a tractor trailer, how to back up, coupling and uncoupling, trip planning, basically everything you should need to land your first trucking job.

Because most of these CDL courses are short, or are offered through the DMV, you will not be able to get financial aid for your training (this may vary on a case by case basis), so you will need a little money to invest in your training.

With the proper training and certifications, you are now ready to get your first job! With a CDL there are many different career paths you can choose, and most everyone can find a job to suit their lifestyle. Some people prefer going on long routes that take them cross country, and some people like routes that have them home every night, it’s all about finding the job that is right for you and that will make you happy.
