While last time we focused on tips for new drivers, here we would like to focus on tips for avoiding accidents. Everyone wants a clean driving record, and everyone tries to avoid accidents, but sometimes they are unavoidable, that’s why they are called accidents, but we have a few tips to put you in the best possible position to avoid getting into an accident.

Our best tip for accident avoidance is just to take your time. When it comes to merging, backing your trailer in, or pulling in or out of the yard, most accidents can be avoided if you just slow down a bit, and take your time. It may take up an extra minute or two, but you will avoid getting into an accident just because you are trying to rush things. While you are taking your time, be thorough. Constantly check your blind spots and be aware of your surroundings. Even if you are on a route you have driven a hundred times, or going to the same loading dock you always go to, always check your blind spots and know where you are going. Nothing is worse than assuming you are clear and then hearing a loud crunch as you start to back up.

Plan your trip ahead of time. Working for a trucking company you may be delivering loads to new clients all the time, and this can be stressful, especially in larger cities. Look up the destination on GPS and get into the street view mode and scout out the entrances and exits. By doing this you can avoid any confusion or tight spaces. Familiarize yourself with the streets around your final destination to make sure you get there as stress free as possible. It is also a good idea to pick up a good ole fashioned road map. GPS is great but they have been known to fail. Having a physical roadmap can be a lifesaver if your GPS breaks or runs out of battery or if you are in an emergency situation.

Like we have said before, when you get to your destination, park your truck and get out and look at the delivery area on foot. It will look a lot different from in the cab, and on foot you can see all of the little nuances and obstacles you may not have seen from in your truck. Doing this will only take you a minute but it can save you the embarrassment and hassle of an accident while backing your truck in.

If you are looking to make a switch and want a trucking company that will provide you with more miles and consistent home time, look no further. Give us a call today to speak with a recruiter to see if FCC is right for you.
