Much of your reputation as a trucker is wrapped up in your safety record, and one mistake can stain your perfect safety record. Being a truck driver requires a lot of skill and responsibility, all while juggling time frames and deadlines. Being safety conscious is important not only for you as the driver but for the general safety of the public. Here are some safety tips from FCC:

  1. Be Alert

This is just driving 101 whether you are talking drivers ed or long haul trucking. Always be aware of your surroundings, including the cars in front of and behind you, as well as what’s coming up on the road.

  1. Check the weather

Before you head out on a run, always check the weather. Different parts of the country have different types of weather, and if you are not used to an area the weather can take you by surprise. Knowing what to expect from the weather will help you wither prepare for bad weather driving, or allow you to plan around it.

  1. Scout out your delivery spot on foot

This is an overlooked tip. If you are delivering to a new or unfamiliar area, park your truck in an easily maneuverable area and get out and check out the are on foot. This will help you avoid getting stuck, or avoid hitting a low pole or ledge you wouldn’t be able to see in the cab. Most accidents occur while reversing the truck, so knowing the lay of the land before you start backing in can save you a lot of headaches.
