Much of your reputation as a trucker is wrapped up in your safety record, and one mistake can stain your perfect safety record. Being a truck driver requires a lot of skill and responsibility, all while juggling time frames and deadlines. Being safety conscious is important not only for you as the driver but for the general safety of the public. Here are some safety tips from FCC:

  1. Give yourself plenty of room

It may be frustrating when traffic is moving slow, but give yourself plenty of room between yourself and the traffic ahead of you. As you know, it takes a long time for a truck to come to a full stop, and giving yourself a few extra seconds in between you and the car ahead of you can be the difference between getting into an accident or not.

  1. Be vigilante at night

It’s typically a good idea to exercise a little more caution at night. Give yourself some extra space, and do not attempt any tight or risky maneuvers. Make sure you are well rested, as driving for miles and miles at night take their toll a lot more quickly than during the day, and staying awake and alert is key to driving safely.

  1. Don’t change lanes

We aren’t saying to never ever change lanes, but try and keep it to a minimum. Cars will speed around and pass you, but the less often you change lanes, the less opportunities there are to get into an accident. When you do change lanes, be hyper aware of the cars around you, check your mirrors and blind spots to make sure no small cars snuck in while you weren’t looking.

At the end of the day at FCC we care about our drivers and want them to be able to make it home safely after every run. If you are a driver who makes safety a priority and has a clean safety record, we want you! View our openings to see if driving for FCC is right for you!
