Much of your reputation as a trucker is wrapped up in your safety record, and one mistake can stain your perfect safety record. Being a truck driver requires a lot of skill and responsibility, all while juggling time frames and deadlines. Being safety conscious is important not only for you as the driver but for the general safety of the public. Here are some safety tips from FCC:

  1. Use a trucker’s GPS

If you don’t already have one, get one. A GPS designed specifically for truck drivers will tell you things that the standard GPS won’t, like how long before your exit, traffic reports, and more. These are extremely helpful especially when you are driving in an unknown area or a busy city you are not used to.

  1. Slow down

Keep it slow, especially when taking a corner or an exit. Your main focus is to not tip your rig when taking a turn. The most important thing is to maintain control over your rig. Only drive as fast as you feel comfortable doing for the situation.

  1. Give yourself a break

Being able to stay awake and alert can be half the battle when driving safely. If you feel like you are getting tired or are slipping, stop and get out and move around. Sometimes all it takes to reenergize yourself is to get up and get moving. This can be especially important while driving at night, when passing headlights can seem to hypnotize you.

At the end of the day at FCC we care about our drivers and want them to be able to make it home safely after every run. If you are a driver who makes safety a priority and has a clean safety record, we want you! View our openings to see if driving for FCC is right for you!
