Driving for many hours to reach your destination can be tiresome. The days feel longer, and the roads seem dull. While this may be one of the few challenges while on the road, did you know that there are countless activities you can do while trucking?

Become a Tourist in the City

Driving your truck for long periods is not always easy. To help you manage the monotony on the road, get some fresh air and move around. Stop by some of the most interesting attractions along the way and do a little exploring. You can visit a reptile park in Colorado, a dinosaur exhibit overlooking California desert, or the unique Carhenge (Stonehenge made of cars) in Nebraska.

Want more ideas? There’s an exciting freshwater fishing museum in Wisconsin, a charming home carved into the rock face in Utah, and a massive underground cavern in Tennessee. You can also explore a grotto of geological wonders in Iowa or surround yourself with a thousand Buddha statues in a garden gazing at the vast countryside of Montana.

Spend Time in the Outdoors

If you have the time to plan out your trip, try camping in some of the best parks in the country. There is something therapeutic about spending time in the outdoors, whether it’s by the lake or in the woods. Wilderness areas managed by the U.S. government usually allows dispersed camping, although permits may be required.

Just bring your basic camping gear and a few extras to have a good time. If you have a detailed route, you can book campsites ahead of time. Although this doesn’t allow much flexibility in your schedule, there are many camping apps available to help you find a great location and reserve a campsite even on the same day as you drive to the destination.

Try out a New Hobby

Another way to fight boredom during your downtime is by starting an activity that you always wanted to attempt before. Of course, you can opt for old standbys, such as reading and writing. These are great ways to pass time, but you can also bring DVD players or stream movies from Netflix, Amazon, or another service. If you find the arts interesting, painting, playing a new musical instrument, and taking photos to document your journey are great options, too. You might find that blogging, knitting, or even learning a new language are exciting for you.

Listen to a Podcast

However, a tight schedule may limit you from engaging in certain hobbies. In that case, why don’t you grab your phone and listen to podcasts instead? Whether you like self-help guides, educational stuff, stand-up comedy, science fiction, or mystery-thrillers, there are thousands of podcasts available to you. Some of the great podcast apps you can choose from include Pocket Casts, Stitcher, Castbox, Spreaker, and Spotify.

Start a Collection of Items

As you travel all over the country, you could start a unique collection to remember each new destination. Whether you have stopped to fuel up, grab a bite, or sleep for the night, try picking up something like a postcard, souvenir, or stamp for safekeeping. Pretty much anything can become a creative collection as you pass through multiple states.

Get Good Sleep and Exercise

It’s essential to unwind and have hobbies, but don’t forget to rest. Get a little exercise, too. You can bring along a bike or jog in safe areas, or you can bring your own mat to do some calisthenics whenever you feel like burning some calories.

At FCC, we know how important it is to keep yourself entertained while on the road. It’s vital to your success as a truck driver. Whatever catches your attention, take the opportunity to have fun and learn new things.
