CDL training teaches you what you need to know to operate your big rig, but it doesn’t teach you everything about the life of a truck driver. CDL training is important, but here are a couple of things about being a truck driver that you need to know.

1. The Importance of Being On Time

Being a truck driver is a professional job that runs on schedules. Schedules are an important part of how any trucking company runs, and as a professional truck driver, you need to be punctual. Learn how to schedule your trips effectively and efficiently. This will help boost your reputation as a professional driver, and help you plan your pickups and dropoffs better!

2. Driving a Truck Can be Dangerous

In most CDL schools, you won’t be told how dangerous driving a truck can. They will teach you plenty of pointers about how to safely operate your truck, but other instances happen as a truck driver that they won’t teach you about, such as being safe loading and unloading your truck, parking in unsafe areas, injuries from not handling equipment properly, and more. Educate yourself on these aspects of safety as a truck driver and keep yourself and your load safe on the road.

3. Dispatchers and Managers

Every driver has a dispatcher/manager. Sometimes they are two different people, and occasionally they hold both titles. It is important to work on having a good relationship with your dispatcher and manager. Being friendly and reliable will help your relationship grow.

4. Take Care of Yourself

Looking after yourself is an important part of being a professional truck driver. If you are getting burnt out on the road, you won’t be able to perform your job as efficiently. Make sure you are taking time for yourself and being self-aware of your health. Be safe when the weather is bad, and don’t overwork yourself when you are sick.

There are a lot of different things that they don’t teach you in CDL training. These are four topics that are important for professional drivers to be aware of and understand.
