Being a truck driver is a lot more than just moving freight from point A to point B. Your head has to be constantly on a swivel and you have to always be aware. Safety is our top priority at FCC, and we want all of our drivers to be able to make it home safely. Here are some things that truck drivers should be always watching for:

Look ahead

You should always try and look as far down the road as possible, and anticipate trouble before it’s right on you. This can include watching for accidents down the road, or something as common and just watching to where onramps are located and where cars are merging.

Keep an escape route

Anytime you are driving, always keep an escape route in mind. If the car in front of you suddenly slams on the breaks, where are you going? Always be aware what is to the left and to the right of your rig, that way if anything happens on the road, you have an escape route.

Maintain a safe bubble

Maintaining a safe bubble around your truck is one of the top safety tips we recommend. If possible, avoid being caught behind cars in traffic. One of the easiest ways to do this is to leave plenty of room in front of your truck. While this can be difficult in heavy traffic areas, just slow down a bit, and let the cars go around you.

Check your mirrors

Checking your mirrors often can ensure that no cars sneak into your blind spot. There has been more awareness recently for cars not to camp in truck’s blind spots, but it is still all too common, see these cars approaching your blind spots before they slip in. Checking often also allows you to check on your trailer and watch for any issues.

Being aware of your surroundings is key to being a good, safe truck driver. If you are an experienced driver with a clean driving record, we want you! Contact us today to speak to a recruiter and start your career for the long haul!
