Truck drivers are essential to the growth of the American economy. About 71% of the goods you see in your stores are brought there by a truck driver.

In 2017, trucks moved around 10.8 billion tons of freight. The trucking industry employs over 7 million people in the United States alone. Without the trucking industry, the American economy would not be able to function. Here are different ways that trucking works with the economy.

Providing Jobs

One of the key signs of a healthy economy is a low unemployment rate. The trucking industry provides the United States with 3.5 million jobs, making it one of the largest occupations in the U.S. The trucking industry is continuing to grow, which will continue to provide more jobs throughout the U.S. Despite the recent COVID-19 pandemic, over 2,000 jobs were added to the trucking industry!

Delivering Goods

There is food on the shelves, household supplies, and other products you may need in every store. Have you ever taken a moment to think about how all these items get there? More often than not, they were delivered by a truck driver! Without the trucking industry, many of these basic items would be more difficult to get, which could cause shortages. Truck drivers also deliver things like gas to your gas station; without them, you wouldn’t be able to fill your car up and make it to work every day.

This is a big driving force in our economy; going out and buying what we need and getting to work are both essential parts of our everyday lives that would be difficult without truck drivers.

Other Industries Rely on Trucking

Truck drivers are responsible for hauling many different products. These products go to your local grocery store, the small business down the street, your favorite restaurant, and even your gas station! These various industries rely on truck drivers to deliver the goods they need to run their businesses.

Closing

The trucking industry is an important part of our economy, which is something that many people do not realize. The trucking industry is responsible for over 3.5 million jobs in the U.S. and helping other businesses run smoothly. Next time you see a truck driver, remember to think about all the good they have made available to you and how much easier your life is with them.
