Life as a truck driver on the open road often seems mysterious to those who aren’t familiar with it. There are many songs written about life on the open road from different perspectives. These songs are fun and entertaining for any truck driver who lives the majority of their life out on the open road. This is a unique love song by Lee Ann Womack written in 1997, all about her love for a man with 18 wheels. It isn’t exactly about life on the open road but about being in love with someone who is living his life on the open road. Our favorite line from this song is, “Well, his home away from home, is in the house that Peter built.”

 

2. Prisoner of the Highway by Ronnie Milsap

This song is specifically about life as a truck driver on the open road. Prisoner of the Highway was written in 1984 by Ronnie Milsap. In this song, he expresses that he is a prisoner of the highway and how the only time he is alive is in his cab hauling a load. Our favorite lyric from this song is “I’m a prisoner of the highway, Imprisoned by the freedom of the road.”

 

3. Drivin My Life Away by Eddie Rabbitt

Eddie Rabbitt wrote this song in 1980, expressing that he was driving his life away looking for something better. He talks about the different parts of spending long days on the road, from the truck stops to the rainy days. Our favorite lyric from this song is “those windshield wipers slappin out a tempo, keepin perfect rhythm with the song on the radio.”

 

4. Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler) by Alabama

Written by Alabama in 1984, this song is written from the outsider’s perspective of a family where the dad is a truck driver. It tells the heartfelt story about a father leaving on his midwest run for the week, enjoying his time on the road and missing his family. It is also clear his wife and kids miss him as well. Our favorite lyric from the song is “Roll on highway, roll on along, roll on daddy till you get back home.”

 

5. Truckin’ by Grateful Dead

Grateful Dead wrote this song in 1970 all about the different places you see while on the road. This song talks about the different big cities on their trip and the different sights they see. This song ends with how long the trip had been and looking forward to going home. Our favorite lyric from this song is “Truckin’ I’m a goin’ home, whoa, whoa, baby, back where I belong.”
