Driving a truck can sometimes be challenging, because you are on the road for hours at a time, and it’s hard to spend time away from your family and friends. Luckily, you can still spend time doing a hobby you like on your downtime. There also are some hobbies that you can take part in while you’re driving to make the time fly by. Here are 10 hobbies you can try while on the road.

Podcasts

There are many podcasts for just about any interest, including sports, news, and history. You can even find ones about the trucking industry. You can find a lot of free podcasts without many ads. This hobby does not require you to use your hands, either, so you can stay safe on the road.

Take Pictures of Your Journey

If you like photography, you can take pictures of the views when at rest stops and points of interest along your route. You can get a nicer camera if your smartphone doesn’t cut it. Plus, you could think about starting a photography blog if your pictures turn out well.

Exercise

You can work out when you are taking breaks. That will help you feel more relaxed and confident while relieving stress. Even a little extra exercise can be good for you. Try walking or using some hand weights that you carry in the truck.

Listen to Audiobooks

This is a hands-free approach to reading and is good for driving. Listen to the latest bestsellers or some classics. You can often find free trials online or see if your local library has audiobooks.

Creativity

You don’t have to avoid being creative when you are away from home. Think about starting to play an instrument, which you can do after a long day. Or try carrying some painting or writing supplies in the cab.

Start a Collection

You will go all over the country as a truck driver, so keep souvenirs from the places you visit. You can pick out a unique item from each state or town you go to.

Learn a Language

If you aren’t bilingual, you may wish that you were. You will now have enough time to study a new language when you are driving. Many learning programs are audio-focused. You can pick up new skills without taking your eyes off the road.

Gaming

No matter what your age, you can enjoy this fun hobby. You can often hook up a flat-screen in the cab and attach a gaming station to it. You can get a lot of entertainment out of a gaming system on your breaks, even if you do not have an internet connection. There is something for everyone out there.

Cooking

Every rest stop likely has food available, and having a homemade meal, however simple, can make you feel more at home. It is harder to cook in your rig if you have a smaller area, but there are many simple methods of cooking. You’ll also save a lot of money.

Writing

It can be a fun hobby and stress reliever to write down what is on your mind. You might consider starting a journal to document how your day was and what you saw and did then. You can also start a blog to show non-truck drivers what it is like to drive all day. You might write about odd things you see on the road or the beautiful scenery.

Truck drivers have plenty of options for hobbies, whether while driving or during rest times. Taking part in a hobby will prevent boredom while making your life more fulfilling. Have a good hobby idea? Share it with FCC!
