As a truck driver, the learning never stops, whether you are a new truck driver, or have been driving for years. Everyone has sat through courses and taken all of the tests, but no amount of studying can prepare you for life on the road. Here are a few tips from experienced drivers that you may not find in a book.

The first tip we have is probably one of the easiest, always look back at your truck after you park. Just make sure there are no lights or blinkers left on, this can save you a lot of headache further down the line.

Another simple concept is to be aware of trailer always. You may think you are good to drive, but if you look back and notice that your trailer is dancing on the line, or going off the road, then it is time to take a break. Also just be aware of the space around the trailer, especially when backing in. One of the best pieces of advice for drivers is when you pull up to your location, just park and get out to scout out the receiving bay area. You will see small things like poles or potholes that can damage your trailer that you wouldn’t see from the cab.

Before you leave for your trip, give your whole rig a pre-trip inspection. Give everything a good once over, paying close attention to your tires, lights, and pins. You never know when you will be asked about your pre-trip inspection, and spotting any minor issues before you leave can prevent them from blossoming into more serious issues while out on the road.

One last quick tip is to never, ever swerve to avoid hitting an animal. That is a good rule to follow when driving a normal car, but it is especially important when driving a tractor trailer. Your instincts may tell you to try and swerve to avoid the animal, but when you do you are putting your life, and other motorist’s lives at risk. The best you can do is to hold on tight, keep traveling straight, and try and slow down without slamming on the brakes.
